Animal Welfare, Contextualized Care & Pet Lighthouse with Guest Caroline Allen

What does it really mean to put animals first? Caroline Allen, veterinary surgeon, animal welfare advocate and former Chief Veterinary Officer at the RSPCA, joins Mike Brampton and Julian Hoad to explore the question.

Caroline reflects on her journey from growing up in Essex and spending 20 years in general practice to taking on senior roles at the RSPCA. She explains why growing frustration with extreme breed conformations, and the health problems they cause, ultimately led her to look beyond clinical practice and towards the wider issues shaping animal welfare.

From extreme breed conformations and contextualised care to the ethics of euthanasia, the conversation examines how vets can better advocate for animal welfare. Caroline also shares the thinking behind Pet Lighthouse and explains the Five Domains Model of animal welfare in the 60-Second CPD Challenge.

This episode is a thoughtful look at veterinary ethics, animal advocacy, and the evolving meaning of good care, with a reminder that putting animals first means looking beyond the diagnosis to understand the life each animal is actually experiencing.
