Niall Connell grew up in the West of Scotland and gained his BVMS degree from Glasgow before entering mixed practice in Fife. He went on to join the PDSA in London for two years before moving back to Glasgow with the charity. Shortly before becoming Senior Veterinary Surgeon at East Glasgow PDSA, he obtained his CertSAO. During this time, he also undertook occasional sole charge locum work.
In 2010, Niall took ill health retirement from clinical practice due to secondary progressive Multiple Sclerosis. He went on to volunteer at an NHS hospital patient information centre in Glasgow and contributed to ad hoc assessment and occasional teaching at Glasgow Vet School.
Niall served on the RCVS Council for ten years, including a term as RCVS President that coincided with the first four months of the Covid-19 pandemic. He also held the position of Treasurer for two years and chaired the Diversity and Inclusion Group. In 2022, he was awarded FRCVS for his meritorious contribution to the veterinary profession and currently serves as Chair of the RCVS Fellowship Board.
In 2023, Niall received an honorary doctorate from the University of Edinburgh in recognition of his contributions to diversity and inclusion. He is now a part-time assessor at Glasgow Vet School and a trustee of the Scottish SPCA.
Niall is passionate about the veterinary and veterinary nursing professions, diversity and inclusion, the work of the RCVS Fellowship, as well as reading, music, and travelling.
