Arlo Guthrie is a veteran of many careers – from frozen cake factory worker and jackaroo to stockbroker, estate agent, commercial pilot, and marketing consultant – before finding his true calling in veterinary publishing. Since 2000, he has been the driving force behind VetNurse.co.uk and VetSurgeon.org, two thriving online communities that connect and inform the veterinary profession across the UK.
His journey into the veterinary world began through a chance commission from Novartis Animal Health to build VetNurse.co.uk. After acquiring the site in 2008, Arlo launched VetSurgeon.org, creating trusted hubs where professionals share expertise, discuss ethical challenges, and learn from one another.
A passionate advocate for evidence-based thinking, Arlo brings a critical lens to science, media, and public discourse – inspired in part by personal experience caring for a child with Dravet’s Syndrome. His curiosity about human error, bias, and belief systems has shaped his distinctive voice as both publisher and communicator. He is involved with making films about a new book: “Veterinary Controversies and Ethical Dilemmas”.
Outside of his professional life, Arlo moonlights as a YouTuber and gadget reviewer at @arlo.guthrie, bringing warmth and humour to his explorations of tech for everyday life. He’s candid about being “a slightly overweight, slightly deaf, slightly balding middle-aged man,” and credits his nickname – not his given name, Alexander – with occasionally helping him snag a good restaurant table.
