Karis Matik is the Marketing and Brand Director at Kernow Vets Messaging, a 24/7 veterinary answering service that supports practices across the UK. Although she entered the veterinary world somewhat unexpectedly, Karis quickly became immersed in the day-to-day realities of the profession, particularly the intense pressure faced by veterinary teams and the importance of communication in reducing stress and building client trust.

At Kernow, she leads on branding and client experience, focusing on inclusive, human-centred communication at every stage of the client journey. Most recently, she oversaw the launch of a nurse-led live web chat service, created to support clients who find phone calls difficult. One of the first users was a deaf-mute client who had previously been unable to access help, providing a powerful example of how thoughtful use of technology can make care more accessible.

Karis volunteers with StreetVet and was named Support Volunteer of the Year in 2024. Her work with the charity has deepened her understanding of empathy, access, and dignity as essential parts of compassionate veterinary care. She was also recognised as a Community Champion in 2024 and was Runner-Up for Employee of the Year at the Westcountry Women’s Awards.

Alongside her practical work, Karis recently contributed an article to Vet Times’ Vet Edge, exploring how small, intentional changes in client communication can lead to better outcomes, especially for clients under stress or from diverse backgrounds.

Outside of work, Karis is a smallholder, crocheter, beach cleaner, music lover, and proud adult fan of LEGO. She brings warmth and authenticity to everything she does, from systems thinking to storytelling. In May 2025, she completed a charity skydive in support of Children’s Hospice South West, raising over £1,360 including Gift Aid for their vital work with families in need.
